Tungsten

Tungsten is a shiny gray very heavy metal and has the highest melting point and boiling point of all metals. The name tungsten comes from rahm = soot, dirt. Tungsten is primarily tungsten but also iron and manganese (FeMn) WO4) and scheelite (tungsten also, CaWO4). The stocks of tungsten are located in China, more deposits in countries such as Australia, Korea, Bolivia, Malaysia, etc. Over 70% of this element is used for tungsten carbide and about 10-25% in various steel alloys and tungsten alloys. The remaining part is used as chemicals.

Important features of Tungsten:

  • the highest melting point of all pure metals up to 3422 °C
  • very high density 19,25 g/cm³ (comparable to the density of gold)
  • good corrosion resistance to many acids, alkalis and liquid metals
  • under vacuum, it has a high heat resistance
  • the hardness of tungtsen is high

Applications of Tungsten:

  • filaments of lamps
  • X-ray tube
  • electrical contacts
  • high voltage conductors
  • heating elements
  • toolholders
  • thermocouple
  • anodes
  • filaments
  • grinding wheels, and other cutting inserts

Common alloys:

  • W 99.95% (powder metallurgy)
  • W-electrodes, includes: WT (Th02), WL (La2O3), WC (CeO2), WZ (ZrO2), Wyoming (Y2O3), WX
  • WRe3, WRe5, WRe25, WRe26

ASTM Standards
